A typical test takes three hours, but fat extractors purchased for faster results also take three hours to complete the test. Uncertainty in results, workload and chemical usage also increased. According to the manual of the Food Safety Authority of India, only 25-50 ml of chemical should be used for testing, but the machine requires one litre of chemical for testing. With this, the device worth lakhs was left in a corner.
The fat extractor is supposed to be at the Thiruvananthapuram lab, where tests are conducted for pesticides and preservatives. Instead, they are gathering dust in milk testing labs in Kochi and where bakery products and oil are tested in Kozhikode.
Employee complaint to investigate
The fat extractor's catalogue states that it can determine the fat content of grains, including fodder, rice, and wheat, as well as meat. However, the Food Safety Department has not set standards for fat content in grains and meat. Fodder inspection is under the purview of the Animal Welfare Department. It is alleged that the purchase committee bought the machines which were not useful for the food safety department by their own decision. The employees filed a complaint at the organizational level demanding an investigation.
'I took charge as Food Safety Commissioner recently. The fat extractor is not noticed. Will investigate and take action."
