FDA bans Red No. 3: Cancer concerns spur Food Safety Action

The FDA's decision is rooted in scientific evidence suggesting that Red No. 3 may cause cancer in laboratory rats. “The petitioners provided data demonstrating that this additive induces cancer in male rats,” the FDA wrote in its notice.
However, it's important to note that the FDA has been careful in its messaging. The agency clarified that studies in other animals and humans did not show similar effects and that current evidence doesn't support claims that the dye's use in food and oral drugs puts people at risk.
The FDA isn't pulling the rug out from under manufacturers overnight. Food producers using Red No. 3 have until January 15, 2027, to reformulate their products. Makers of ingested drugs have an even longer grace period, with a compliance deadline of January 18, 2028.
This gradual phase-out allows companies time to adapt their recipes and production processes, minimizing disruption to the market while still prioritizing consumer safety.
The ban comes amid increasing scrutiny from lawmakers and consumer advocacy groups. FDA Commissioner Robert Califf faced tough questions about food dyes in a recent Senate Committee hearing, indicating growing political pressure on the issue.
