The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the licenses of five eating houses after serious violations were found during inspections and in the food samples. The FDA said that of 60 samples collected, laboratory outcomes have shown only two samples were ‘sub-standard’ while 27 have been found safe, meeting the Food Safety and Standard Authority of India (FSSAI) norms.
The result of 31 samples are still pending.
With a view to check the safety and standard of the food served at the eating houses, their hygiene and sanitation, FDA had been conducting sweeping inspections across the district. The Nagpur division inspected 205 eating houses and collected 60 samples of eatables, ingredients and raw materials over the last nine months, between April and December 2023. The agency said it has so far found serious violations in only 9% of the places inspected.
Around 11 cases of bigger eating houses, having annual turnover of over ₹12 lakh, were put before the adjudicating official joint commissioner Krushna Jaipurkar for further process, including levying of fines.
FDA assistant commissioner Prashant Deshmukh, who was part of the inspection exercise, said 125 eating houses, outlets and smaller vendors were served with ‘improvement notices’ after certain minor violations were found during inspections, like non-registration with FSSAI, uncovered food, not using gloves or clean cooking aprons, unclean utensils, not declaring the ‘best before period for consumption’ and so on.
