The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) will bolster the capability of fortifying staple food such as edible oil, wheat flour and milk in the country to combat micronutrient deficiency.
Food fortification is the practice of adding vitamins and minerals to commonly consumed food during processing to increase their nutritional value
Inoshi Sharma, executive director, FSSAI, said, “We know that many people are deficient in vitamin D. As per the law, it is mandatory to procure packed oil. If we fortify it with vitamin D, deficiency can be taken care of.”
