The department received about 2,000 complaints in the last seven months but raided about 25,000 establishments in the same time period. And, 6,400 samples were lifted and analysed. About 900 were found to be contaminated. Surprise checks were done in various hotels and restaurants, and notices issued to 2,655 of them. A penalty of 1.3 crore has been imposed so far, and cases registered in 1,921 complaints.
Sathish Galley, a resident of OMR, said while FSSAI acts upon established restaurants, people are more worried about contamination of food in roadside shop . “The FSSAI and the Greater Chennai Corporation, the two enforcement agencies, have not been doing much other than raiding hotels, that too on complaints. The Street Vending Act remains on paper,” he said. The authorities need to act against unlicensed and unauthorised eateries.
T Balasubramanian from Ramapuram, who recently suffered food poisoning, said that none of the food establishments, especially road eateries, bothered about complying with norms.
