seems Cuttack has now become a major centre for adulteration of food products. Such questions have now cropped up after a joint team of Commissionerate Police and Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) Health Squad busted a unit engaged in the manufacturing of adulterated spices in the Malgodown area in the city. One person, who is said to be the owner of the unit, has been detained in this connection.
Senior officials said that the unit was preparing adulterated red chilli powder, turmeric and other spices. The owner of the unit was allegedly mixing rice powder and colours in the chilli powder.
CMC health officials said that such adulteration in food items can pose serious health hazards.
“We got information from Malgodown Police regarding the unit and we found that rice powder and colour was mixed in spices. Around 300 grams of rice powder was mixed to prepare the spices. As colour was being used, it may cause health hazards including impact on liver and other body parts,” said City health officer, Satyabrata Mohapatra.
According to Mohapatra, several samples have been collected and they would be sent for lab examination.
“I used to mix rice powder and colour to make some money. Some traders used to come and purchase the articles,” said the owner.
The Food Safety officials on Wednesday seized 13 tonnes of non-iodised salt that was sold without authorisation in Koyambedu.
