New Delhi: A testing lab of the Directorate of Agricultural Marketing, set up to curb adulteration and provide pure vegetables and fruits to the people, has been closed for almost a year. Because of this, pesticides are not being tested in vegetables and fruits. This has been revealed through an RTI. However, it is claimed that the Food and Safety Department (FSSAI) is testing vegetables in its own lab.
Spread over 71acres, the Azadpur vegetable market receives about 5,000 trucks daily, which are loaded with vegetables and fruits. RTI activist Ajay Kumar Yadav said that a reply was sought through RTI in December 2023 for the investigation of chemicals and pesticides in vegetables and fruits in the Azadpur vegetable market. The Directorate of Agricultural Marketing called for a visit to the testing lab on April 8. Where only two rooms were shown in the name of the lab on the spot, the goods were kept haphazardly and no testing lab was found running here. Ajay said that when information was taken about this, it was found that the renovation of the lab has been going on for a year, due to which pesticides are not being tested in vegetables. At the same time, a few months ago, an advertisement was also taken out for appointments by the department.
