HYDERABAD: Next time you step out for a meal, be careful as the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has given India's youngest state a meagre overall score of 32 of 100 in the Food Safety Index 2022-2023 report. Telangana has been placed 14th among the 20 large states in the contry.
Alarmingly, it fared badly in all six important parameters.The category that judges the compliance of companies, hotels, restaurants and institutions to set food safety levels saw the state score an abysmal 25%. The scores were the same in 'consumer empowerment' category, which indicates poor awareness and a weak grievance redressal system in case
people need to complain about food with the authorities.
Further, the lack of laboratories and experts to conduct efficient tests on food samples, collected during enforcement, resulted in Telangana scoring only 44%. Other parameters such as human resources and training which focuses on improving the FSSAI standards were also low at 38% and 25% respectively.
"These poor scores indicate that eateries take the government's hygiene and health standards for granted. The government is encouraging night food streets by providing spaces. But, none of them follow basic hygiene conditions like wearing gloves, head covers and use adulterants and unhealthy ingredients," said Dr Aruna Devi, a dietician and nutritionist working private hospital.
