Following the death of a 14-year-old girl after reportedly consuming shawarma from an eatery in Tamil Nadu’s Namakkal district, the state health department instructed officials to conduct quality checks at restaurants across the state and formed special teams to monitor them.
On Tuesday, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) conducted raids at eateries in several places in Chennai and found they were selling stale meat dishes. Authorities, who issued a notice to the shops to temporarily stop their sale, also destroyed these meat dishes.
An FSSAI team led by Dr P Satheesh Kumar inspected 76 shops in areas like West Mambalam and Arumbakkam, among others. According to Satheesh Kumar, they found additives in chicken meat and also that stale meat was being stored.
